Description
Saturn V rocket, cutaway illustration. Used by NASA to launch the Apollo missions to the Moon, the Saturn V launch vehicle carried three astronauts in the Command/Service Module at the top, with the Lunar Module lander in its compartment below. The bulk of the launch vehicle housed tanks (gold) of rocket propellant, liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen oxidizer to fuel the engines. The 100 metre-tall Saturn V was a disposable design, each rocket being used only once. Apollo 11 achieved the first manned lunar landing in July 1969 and Apollo 17 flew the last mission in the series in December 1972.
