Description
Blast furnace. Ruins of Springfield Furnace (left), Royer, Pennsylvania, USA. This site was operated by Royer and Company. The process was powered by a water wheel (right), and the iron forged at Cove Forge. Dating from around the 1930s, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
