At the back parking lof of the Davis Commons plaza is one of the entrances to the UC Davis Arboretum. As you start on the path you pass under an unusual archway made of 440 community donated rusty shovels. The welded Shovel Gateway was created by Christopher Fennell in 2013. The tangle of metal resembles vines and leaves from the distance. In the area of the Shovel Gateway is the Gateway Garden with flowing sedges and other native grasses to welcome visitors to the Arboretum trail. The trail is a 3.6 mile loop going along both sides of Putah Creek with labeled shrubs and trees. The Davis Arboretum was founded in 1936. Another welcome tip is that the parking lot is free on weekends to either visit the Arboretum or to dine at restaurants in Davis Commons, like the sushi restaurant, Mikuni’s.
