Here we have a soldier of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment: part of the legendary western “Iron Brigade” in the summer of 1863. By this point of the war, the regiment had been part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the Army of the Potomac’s 1st Corps and were among the first infantry regiments to engage in the fighting on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. Although many of the regiment, by this point, had been issued sack coats, this particular soldier had retained the regiment’s distinctive federal frock coat, as well as the linen and leather leggings that were issued to the 6th and many units in the Army of the Potomac in 1862.
