Valley of Fire State Park (entry fee) is located north of Las Vegas about 50 miles and can be easily reached via Interstate 15, or if you have time for a more leisurely ride, going north along the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (National Park Pass accepted). Valley of Fire Park is Nevada’s largest and oldest state park and is known for it’s bright red Aztec sandstone nestled in tan and grey limestone.
There are areas marked with 3,000 year old petroglyphs as well as hiking trails, rock climbing and beautiful scenery. The area was once home of the Anasazi people. It is a beautiful day trip if looking for a break from the Vegas glitz or a great picnic trip if you go in the Spring or Fall but be advised of the scorching heat from mid-May to October.
