At the end of the perfect afternoon, a couple pauses on the bridge to embrace each other and luxuriate in the sensation of being in love.
When we think of Date Night, such an excursion is one that enters our fantasies – wandering through an exotic, European city (why is it that we never think of small towns in the United States as “exotic”?), stopping for a light lunch in an outdoor cafe, wending our way through cobblestone streets, and pausing on an arched bridge over the canal waterways and just soaking in the exuberance of it all.
Sometimes, this fantasy becomes real, and a couple experiences as reality the places they have always dreamed about. But the perfect Date Night, or Date Day, does not require extensive travel. Though those small towns of the United States mentioned above never top the list as romantic destinations for couples, any place a couple in love finds themselves has the potential to be romantic: because it’s not the place that makes the day romantic, it is the couple themselves, their feelings for one another, their hopes and dreams for the future, their shared experiences of the past.
For such a couple, a trip to the hardware store to buy paint to renovate a dated kitchen can become the perfect afternoon in Venice; the simple meal at the outdoor cafe is a sub sandwich in a little bistro; the embrace on the arched bridge overlooking the canal waterways is a stroll through the park, feeding the ducks and visiting the rose garden.
What matters most is time together – time to talk, time to dream, time to brainstorm, time to imagine, time to express to one another what it is they love about the person whom they love. This is romance, and it transcends location.
