Artist's Description
Portrait of a young shepherd boy and his faithful sheep dog in a style typical of Cornish artist John Opie (1761-1807), a former carpenter's apprentice whose remarkable natural talent saw him rise from obscurity to national fame as one of the great portrait artists of his day. Leading English painter Sir Joshua Reynolds was so impressed with Opie's abilities, he regularly compared him to Caravaggio and Velasquez. Opie married poet and novelist Amelia Alderson (1769-1853), a prominent abolitionist whose beauty and vivaciousness are brilliantly captured in Opie's portrait of her from c.1798-1800. Later in his career, Opie switched to historical subjects, again with great success, and when he died he was buried in St Paul's cathedral in a crypt next to Reynolds. His wife published a biography of her husband, Memoir of John Opie (1809), became a Quaker and continued to be active in the abolitionist movement.
