Description
Active galaxy NGC 1068, composite image. NGC 1068 (M77) is a barred spiral galaxy about 47 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus. This image combines X-ray and visible light data. High-energy X-rays (magenta) are observed by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), while the visible light data is from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The X-rays are from the galaxy's supermassive black hole, with its active galactic nucleus (AGN) classified as a quasar. This active centre is obscured in visible light by thick clouds of gas and dust, but is visible here in X-rays. Image published in 2015.
