Description
One of the three african elephants at the Toronto zoo. After lengthy debate about the suitability of our climate and available space, they will be moving. PAWS, the Performing Animal Welfare Society, runs an animal sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif., that takes in retired zoo and circus elephants. The plan is for the elephants to travel across the continent in two climate-controlled trucks, a journey that will take about 50 hours, including stops for food, rest and veterinarian checks. Three elephant managers and two veterinarians, all of whom have pachyderm-moving experience, will travel with the convoy.
I hope Iringa, Thika and Toka enjoy their new home. I believe they will have far more space and there will be new elephants to meet. Given their keen intellect and gregarious nature it seems a good thing for them. They will be missed.
