Thank you so much Beth for the feature in the 500 And Beyond Fine Art Group!!

I appreciate your description. I see you included the scientific name. That reminds of me back when I was little and my father, who's a biologist used to take me to the Botanical Gardens and started speaking this other language totally weird to me (latin), trying to teach me the proper names, not one stuck. But good memories, and your picture brought them back. Great close shot

Artist's Description

Colocasia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to southeastern Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. Some species are widely cultivated and naturalized in other tropical and subtropical regions. Common names include Elephant-ear, Taro, Cocoyam, Dasheen, Chembu, Champadhumpa, and Eddoe. Elephant-ear and Cocoyam are also used for some other large-leaved genera in the Araceae, notably Xanthosoma and Caladium. The generic name is derived from the ancient Greek word kolokasion which in the Greek botanist Dioscorides (1st century AD) meant the edible roots of both Colocasia esculenta and Nelumbo nucifera. It is thought that the edible roots of Colocasia esculenta have been cultivated in Asia for more than ten thousand years. They are herbaceous perennial plants with a large corm on or just below the ground surface. The leaves are large to very large, 20-150 cm (7.9-59.1 in) long, with a sagittate shape. The elephant's-ear plant gets its name from the leaves, which are...

About Judy Whitton

I am a self taught photographer and a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana. My love of photography started out in the late 60's when I was given a box camera to use. Back then the rolls of film I was given to use were few and far between. So, that taught me to be very selective about what I took photos of. Somewhere along the line I was given a 110mm instamatic camera and didn't buy my first and only 35mm camera, a Nikon EM, in the early 80's. In 2002 at a family reunion, my uncle was showing me his digital camera. I was totally fascinated at the idea of being able to take as many photos as I wanted without having to buy film or have it developed. Shortly afterwards, I bought my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica CD400. I used...
