Description
Collagen fibrils from the human lung.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and the main structural protein that makes up the extracellular matrix, which makes up the bulk of the materials between cells and is not only key for providing structural support but provides essential biochemical and biomechanical cues that are critical for normal tissue function. In softer tissues such as the lung, elastic fibers allow for the tissue to stretch as it needs too while the collagen prevents overstretching which would break the elastic fibers.
