The ozone hole is a seasonal phenomenon that occurs during the Antarctic spring (August and September). Polar winds keep cold air trapped above the continent, and reactions between ice clouds, sunlight and man-made chlorine degrades the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Levels of ozone-damaging chemicals have fallen since the 1987 Montreal Protocol. Image taken by NASA's Aura satellite on 16th September 2013.
