Mine were college students. Arguably, high school is exactly when they should seriously discuss the important issues he so brilliantly and playfully explores. However, I understand your circumstance. I hope you teach them "somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond." Whew! Chokes me up every time... :)

My students (high school) are a bit young for that particular poem, but they have a field day with "if anyone lived in a pretty how town" and many others. He is one of my favs to teach.

Me too! My students were delighted when I did a dramatic reading for them. :) Filled with truths.

Ah! Another cummings fan! :) He moves me in such powerful ways. For a fun look at his ribald side, check out "may I feel said he..." I think you will love it, Deborah.

Thanks very much, Cheri! The building and its history are a sad indictment of a system gone wrong.

Steve, very haunting and truly thought provoking. Sad commentary on the lives that many children probably lead - most of us will never know. Voted

Thank you, kk! I am haunted by that question as well. Did she play here alone? If a parent was there, wouldn't they take the bike home? Why was the doll abandoned inside? These and the bigger economic questions all trouble me. There are forces at work here that I don't like yet feel helpless to correct.

Artist's Description

This monolithic stone building was the coal company store and headquarters in a small West Virginia town. When the company left, it became Stonehaven, a fittingly named drug rehab facility. Now it sits abandoned...a testament to lost dreams and ruined lives. We found the bike as is and my buddy found the doll inside amongst the debris. Even in bright sunlight the whole scene felt hauntingly mysterious and sad.
The title is the opening line of a wonderful poem by e e cummings.

About Steve Harrington

Steve Harrington

I am a retired professor at a college in Toronto and taught critical thinking and communications. In the past I also taught literature, creative thinking and problem solving. I've also had the opportunity to teach about and lead tours to a variety of world destinations including backpacking through the Canadian Rockies, traveling above the Arctic Circle in Norway, into the Sahara in Morocco, and throughout Southeast Asia with a special focus on Thailand. It was my four tours to India that formed me most profoundly, both as a person and as a photographer. It is a magic land of extremes in every sense of the word. More recently I had the opportunity to expand my world view with travel to the Peruvian Andes, the back roads of West...
