"Apples and Lilacs, Silver Vase, Vintage Stoneware Jug" includes a tall silver trophy vase on loan from a friend, who kept asking if I had made a painting of it yet. So I put it together with the tall Chinese vase and the other stuff you see here. Extremely tall objects are harder to position in my usual compositions.

And painting a vase of flowers is one thing, but auditioning the supporting cast is another. Some people, whether they are artists or not, just seem to have an innate sense of good design and don't need to study "The Golden Mean" or other such time-tested visual schemes to figure it out. I don't, unfortunately, have that in my DNA, so composing a painting is always a frustrating experience for me.

One still life painter I knew let his studio mate set up all their still life arrangements because she was good at it. I often wish someone would do that for me!
