Description
Artificial islands, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is towards lower left. Dubai, the largest city in the region, has been the location of numerous large-scale developments and architectural works. Among the most visible are three large artificial archipelagos. The two palm islands are Palm Jumeirah (centre left, started 2001) and Palm Jebel Ali (centre, started 2006). The World Islands (further to the left, started 2003) depict a world map. These projects required millions of cubic metres of sand and rocks to be deposited in the Persian Gulf. Photographed by an Expedition 39 crew member on 13 April 2014.
