Superb B-24 painting; the detail work is exquisite. What a great complement Marc has given this piece of art. Coming from a highly known professional realistic painter of aircraft should make others take notice of Gene's work.

Hi Gene, Great job on your B-24. Excellent contrast of the aircraft against the countryside. I like the gradual haziness as the ground extends to the horizon--it gives a feeling of altitude. I like the accurate detail of the 24--many artists can't seem to get the shape of the B-24 right, but you've done a magnificent job. Keep up the good work. Regards, Marc

Artist's Description

This is the 2nd Lead Assembly Ship for the 458th Bomb Group, belonging to the 754th Bomb Squadron. She was known in the airgroup as the" Spotted Ape", " Spotted Ass Ape", and " Wonder Bread" Before given this wild paint scheme she was known as Dixie Bell II. Prior to this aircraft there was one other " First Sergeant" with this paint scheme. It was destroyed on the ground when a flare gun accidentally discharged in the aircraft.
The mission of these brightly painted aircraft was to help the airgroup form up on a single leader. The white stripe in the red cicle on the fuselage even had lights in it so the group could see it at night. Once the group was formed up the aircraft would break away from the formation and head back to the airbase.
I want to thank two people for their assistance in this painting. I had limited information on this aircraft, but a close friend 'Larry Keahey '(over in the photograhy section of this site) came up with some color pictures o...

About Gene Ritchhart

Gene Ritchhart

My name is Gene Ritchhart. I was born and raised in San Diego, Ca. My father was a career Navy man, thus my early years growing up were spent primarily in San Diego. After I graduated from El Cajon High School I joined the Army. While in the army I was the driver of an M113a1 Armored Personnel Carrier. While stationed in Mainz, Germany I found that I could make a little money selling my art work. After the army I used the GI Bill to go to college and attained an A.A.degree in Art. I currently live in the state of Washington where I am continuously inspired by this states beauty. Thanks for viewing my work.
