To Pat Speirs: Is this a painting or a photograph? It looks so real. Love the artwork.

Pat Speirs replied:

It is a digital composite 'photograph' - an image of the B17 extracted from its original airshow pic and combined with a more sympathetic skyscape. Thanks for your interest, much appreciated.

Not vivid in colour like expected also it was an expensive gift for someone that arrived screwed up in a thin polythene bag. Not even folded with card to keep in place , even budget brands on the cheap high street stores have them folded and well presented very disappointed to be honest.

Great colors literally perfect print wise! I just wish it was thicker like a warm blanket. But look wise it was perfect. I used it for a contest I was doing.

Artist's Description

B17 Developed as the main arm of the US Army Air Corps bomber force the B17 was designed from the outset to be self-sufficient in a combat environment. Intended to provide all round defence capability against fighter attack the B17s were employed in relatively tight formations and supplied with an array of 0.5inch heavy machine guns The theory of mutual self defence was found wanting in the early operations and loss rates were horrendous. With advent of long range fighter escort (P51 and P47) the mission profile became more supportable and continual long range daylight missions did much to end the European WW2 hostilities. While making a huge impact in the round the clock bombing missions the B17 always suffered from a low total bomb load of only 6,000lbs for normal range sorties. The image portrays a B17 G model - Yankee Lady - currently flying in USA.

About Pat Speirs

Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
