Atop a hill in College Park, just above the Bema, stands Bartlett Tower, a 71-foot-tall stone structure built between 1885 and 1895. President Samuel Colcord Bartlett suggested it in 1884 to replace the Lone Pine, the legendary but dying tree that had stood on the site since the time of Eleazar Wheelock. The class of 1885 laid the foundation for the tower themselves, and successive classes gathered rock from the area and funded stonemasons for its completion. The Lone Pine, by then further damaged by lightning and wind, was cut down when the tower was finished.
