At the end of the day, few of us feel like grabbing our coat and the car keys and heading out to a box store. Or driving down a busy freeway. Or going back to work and the cubicle, to tackle yet another project.
No, the end of the day is a quiet, special, reflective time, and many of us – rightly so – feel that the minutes or hours within it belong to us. It is a time for calmness and tranquility, a winding down from the frenetic pace that “modern” society imposes upon us in the name of efficiency (which is really something that we expect of machines; and because we increasingly see human beings as things, something we extol as one of the highest virtues on the planet).
Before the Bath, the artwork, celebrates this moment of quiet peacefulness. Resting on the cool tiles of an exquisite bathroom, a young woman gazes into the waters of the bath. A gentle steam arises from the heated water, and the woman takes her time before entering. There is no hurry. There is no frantic need to accomplish something.
And most especially, there is no requirement to jump in and out quickly, get dressed, and go work on the dishes.
Candles placed throughout the room gently flicker, and the woman’s eyes travel from the water to the candles, back to the water and then to the flowers in the vase. She is relaxed, content, winding down from the day and enjoying every minute of the moment.
There is a luxury to moments like this, regardless of what our bathroom looks like. Indeed, when we are in a quiet, peaceful place, soaking in warm water and taking time to close our eyes and think gentle thoughts, we are all in a place of luxurious contentment.
It takes little more than time, and a determination to take it.
Before the Bath, the artwork, is complemented by After the Bath, Introspection, and Bathed in Light, also on this site.
