Just after sunrise the colors and distinctive striations of the landscape of Badlands National Park (South Dakota, USA) are most evident at the Big Badlands Overlook. The view encompasses the spires, canyons, and ridges characteristic of the badlands country as well as ravines and canyons created by erosion. In addition to the spires, columns, walls, and other formations, erosion from wind, water and frost has also created ravines, canyons, and channels. The beginnings of the erosion which created the current topology of the Badlands began about 500,000 years ago. The striated appearance of many of the formations in the Badlands is a result of the various geological periods of the area.
