A afternoon capture of the beautiful Blackberry Lily, in my Illinois garden, a small flower but a unique eye-catching flower for the garden. The flower has red to black freckled orange blossoms 2 inches in diameter. The green seed pod opens with a display of black seeds.
Iris domestica, comply known as Leopard Lily, blackberry Lily, and Leopard flowers, is an ornamental plant in the Iridaceae family. This famous lily is not a lily at all, but a member of the iris family. It is native to China and Japan, but naturalizes easily here in North America. The blackberry in the name refers to the seed which are formed in large bulbous seed cases which crack open in fall revealing the shiny black seeds.
