Description
In this photo of the Blackstone Building in Omaha, Nebraska, I chose a symmetrical, centered composition to emphasize its stately elegance. The facade of this historic brick building, built on a steel frame, is notable for its repeated patterns. In stark contrast to the dark red of the bricks, the windows are framed in white and surrounded by and set in white terra cotta detailing. Originally an upscale residential hotel, built in 1915, the building, located at the intersection of 36th and Farnam Streets, operated as a regular hotel from 1920 until well into the 1970's. It now houses offices and is owned by the Peter Kiewit Corporation.
I learned several interesting "tidbits" as I researched this building. The first Reuben sandwiches were supposedly served in one of its restaurants, as was the first butter brickle ice cream. For a time, the elegant hotel maintained its own fleet of limousines for its out of town guests who arrived by train. Among its well-known guests "back in the day" are Eleanor Roosevelt, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope and Richard Nixon.
