The ornamental pear tree (pyrus calleryana) and its cultivars possess characteristics that make them ideal as landscaping centerpieces. With an abundance of showy flowers in warmer seasons and striking leaf color in the cooler ones, ornamental pears bring beauty year round. In addition to their ornamental attributes, they are relatively simple to care for, as well as utilitarian.
Most types of ornamental pear trees have a rounded shape and erect habit, with a high or low spreading canopy. However, characteristics vary depending on the cultivar. Some, such as the "Aristocrat" (Pyrus calleryana "Aristocrat") and the "Redspire" (Pyrus calleryana "Redspire"), both found in USDA zones 5 to 8, have a conical shape, and the "Capital" culitivar (Pyrus calleryana "Capital"), which grows in USDA zones 4 through 8, is a columnar tree.
