Description
In the late 19th century Iquique in northern Chile was one of the most important ports in South America, thanks to the nitrate mining boom in the surrounding Atacama Desert. The period wooden mansions on Baquedano Street are a legacy from the period and now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many other buildings in the older part of the city and near the port are also of timber construction, often with wonderful weathered textures and peeling paint patterns.
