Bristol Fighters – ‘Home is the Hunter’
A flight of Bristol Fighters recover to a rough field strip in Flanders as the light fades. Navigation was very much by visual interpretation at that time and the French churches, the centre of every community, were invaluable check points. Many churches put a lantern in the bell-tower to aid late comers in finding the field –along with the primitive flare pots (oily rags in tin cans) marking the landing area. The crews would be relieved to make the field as night flying was not a regular activity in these early days.
