In the 15th and 16th centuries, paid soldiers who served the monarch of Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor, and others were known as 'Landsknecht' (mercenary) units. Pikemen and foot soldiers, they eventually became the universal mercenaries of the Northern European Renaissance.
