Description
Cartagena Palace, Cartagena
The Palace of Cartagena, also known as Cartagena City Council, is one of the main modernist buildings of the city of Cartagena (Region of Murcia) built between 1900 and 1907, the work of Valladolid architect Tomas Rico Valarino.
Due to the boom reached by the city at the beginning of the 20th century, the old consistorial house, of the Herrerian style, from the 16th century, had become too small, so in 1900 the construction of the new Town Hall on the site of the old one began, works that would end in 1907.
It is a triangular building. The façade is made entirely of white marble, and the zinc domes stand out on the roof. All the exterior is decorated repeatedly with the emblems of the city: the castle of the Conception of the shield of the city, and the mural crown, granted by the Roman general Escipión the African when it took the city of Carthago Nova.
In its interior highlights the large imperial staircase around which are various municipal facilities such as the plenary hall and the mayor's office. The casting works such as columns and lamps and the collection of paintings of illustrious figures of the city since the 18th century are worth mentioning.1
