A cascade of cool water flows into the still pool below. Nature's hidden spots are ones of peace and thought.

Finding these spots is not necessarily easy. While it does not always require a several mile hike up a steep incline to a wilderness area (and there are many beautiful spots to be found this way), sometimes it involves little more than getting out of the car and being willing to walk several hundred steps or so. But for some people, the sheer act of getting out of the car and taking a few moments – on the chance that one might find something -- does not fit into the schedule. So it never gets done.

But being willing to take a few minutes to explore leads one to many surprising places, even if the starting point was parking lot just off of a busy highway. And while the starting point may not seem auspicious, if one is willing to walk just a bit and be patient, it’s possible to be surprised.

Most people don’t, you know – get out of the car and look around. Because we are a busy people – indeed, a too-busy people, we frequently tell ourselves that we don’t have time to do anything but get in the car and drive to our next destination, where we have something waiting that needs to be done, and will keep us busy again.

Cascadia, the artwork, invites the viewer to stop whatever they’re doing at this moment and step into a landscape of water, sound, coolness, shade, and a surrounding enclave of trees and rocks. “Stop just a moment,” the artwork says, “and enjoy a quiet period in which you don’t have to do anything but watch the water splash into the pool below. Isn’t it beautiful?”

Take that moment, right now, and hear the sound of the water. Can you feel the cool spray on your face?
