Description
Caterpillar proleg. Dark-field light micrograph of part of the skin of a caterpillar, showing a proleg (centre). The proleg is a short stubby protrusion, which ends in a ring of large hooked hairs or setae. The preparation has flattened the proleg sideways so the hooks are on top of one another (brown mass in the middle). The compressed proleg has produced rings of skin with long setae. The proleg grips the surface in two ways: by the hooked hairs; and the end plate, which acts as a sucker. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
