Unlike many other cathedrals in Europe, Il Duomo of Milan Italy has no campanile or bell tower. But you can get a good look at both the details of the cathedral's statues and spires and the nearby San Gottardo Bell Tower from the cathedral's rooftop. One source says there are 135 spires on the cathedral, each mounted with a statue depicting important people in Milan's history and different characters in the bible. The Duomo is the most important gothic architectural work in all of Italy. It took nearly six centuries to complete, starting in 1385 and having final finishes applied as late at 1965. It is the second largest church in Italy after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the third in the world. This statue and spire looks out onto the octagonal San Gottardo Bell Tower. San Gottardo was built as a chapel by Azzone Visconti (founder of the state of Milan) in 1330 and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
