Description
Jefferson County
In 1849, Thomas Maddox entered into a partnership with John Morse (of Morse’s Mill) to start a saddle-tree manufacturing company. Maddox supplied the water power and Morse ran the machinery to build saddle trees for pack saddles. Unfortunately, the men had a falling out the following year and Morse brought a lawsuit against Maddox. When all was said and done, the partnership was dissolved, and Maddox was left nearly penniless.
Louis B. Radeacker moved to Maddox Mill in 1882 to “operate a roller mill at the same location as Maddox’s old worn-down mill. About that time, an article ran in the Jefferson Democrat suggesting the name of the town be changed to “Enterprise” in honor of the new mill of the same name. A similar attempt to change the name of the town to Jefferson Mill was made in the 1870s by the postmaster, but the idea apparently didn’t take hold, and most residents continued to call the area Maddox Mill well into the mid- 1900s. In 1933, the town was renamed Cedar Hill.
A post office established in 1868 and continues to operate . Spelled Cedarhill (Postal Guide 1896- 1904). Named because of the many cedar trees on the hillsides.
