Red Hot Poker (Torch Lily)
Kniphofia uvaria
Family : Xanthorrhoeaceae
Native to Africa, these exotic plants became treasures in the Victorian gardens, and treasures to bees and hummingbirds as well - they love these plants.
The red hot poker becomes especially prolific with blooms after a fire; the dead vegetation is burnt off and nutrients are released into the soil. But contrary to what one might think, these fiery blooms prefer a damp, rather than arid, soil.
This vividly coloured plant was named in 1747 after a German professor of medicine and amateur botanist who had invented a method of plant illustration by recording the outlines of pressed dried specimens covered with ink onto paper. There are some delicate colours as well.

At the end of day, the sun beginning to turn a golden hue, the red hot pokers catch my eye. From a distance, the bright blooms look like small balloons bursting out of the stalk. But, sitting down next to them, I notice the cluster of little bells swinging on the stem. Ever curious, peeking inside: a myriad of bright, tiny, blooms, draping downwards; a natural, luminous chandelier.
