Fascinating. Have you ever done any SHAY Engines from around 1880's? Just wondering. Because I was going to wood burn a SHAY engine either on one large piece of basswood, either/or 3 smaller 8" by 10" plaques linked together...

Dominic Piperata replied:

Hi Tim. This painting gave me fits. I must have redone parts of it 5 times. The original image came from a college friend of mine in Colorado. It was an antique black-and-white photo about 2.5x as wide, and pretty messed up. I'm not sure of the origin of the locomotive - possibly European? I liked the engine's shape - it reminded me of that monster that Strelnikov had for his mobile command in "Dr. Zhivago". In the photo, the engine wasn't moving, so I added the steam, a hint of the engineer in the cab to give some perspective to the size of those wheels, and ran the tinting from dark to light, front to back to add more sense of forward motion. And no, I haven't done very many railroad themed images. They're so difficult to successfully pull off, and it's a niche audience as well. If you're planning to attempt a vintage locomotive as a pyrograph, my hat is already off to you!

This is not a towel, but a thin piece of felt printed on one side, the other side blank white.. The reproduction of the painting is fine, but the description as a towel is completely misleading since it cannot be used as a towel. I was totally disappointed in the quality of this item

Received the order today. The towel came in soiled or dirty. See attached photo

About Dominic Piperata

I have been making art in one form or another since I was very young, and it has remained a lifelong fascination for me. Although I attended an art school in California, I consider myself to be mostly self-taught. This is because I was in school back in the late 1960's and early 1970's, and in the 50-odd years since then, the various processes involved in creating and reproducing art have been profoundly changed by the inception of digital technologies. Most of the things we take for granted now, such as high-resolution digital cameras, professional inkjet printers, and powerful imaging technologies were only science fiction dreams back then. I maintain a healthy sense of curiosity about new technologies and am patient enough to research...
