Fascinating. Have you ever done any SHAY Engines from around 1880's? Just wondering. Because I was going to wood burn a SHAY engine either on one large piece of basswood, either/or 3 smaller 8" by 10" plaques linked together...

Dominic Piperata replied:

Hi Tim. This painting gave me fits. I must have redone parts of it 5 times. The original image came from a college friend of mine in Colorado. It was an antique black-and-white photo about 2.5x as wide, and pretty messed up. I'm not sure of the origin of the locomotive - possibly European? I liked the engine's shape - it reminded me of that monster that Strelnikov had for his mobile command in "Dr. Zhivago". In the photo, the engine wasn't moving, so I added the steam, a hint of the engineer in the cab to give some perspective to the size of those wheels, and ran the tinting from dark to light, front to back to add more sense of forward motion. And no, I haven't done very many railroad themed images. They're so difficult to successfully pull off, and it's a niche audience as well. If you're planning to attempt a vintage locomotive as a pyrograph, my hat is already off to you!

Super happy how print came out, but looks a little less vibrant even after just a cool water quick wash. Still nice looking, but would have preferred the vibrancy to have remained.
