Description
The colorful layers in the Chinle Formation found in northern Arizona on the Navajo Reservation represent ancient soil horizons. The coloration is due to the presence of various minerals. While the red and green layers generally contain the same amount of iron and manganese, differences in color depend on the position of the groundwater table when the ancient soils were formed. In soils where the water table was high, a reducing environment existed due to a lack of oxygen in the sediments, giving the iron minerals in the soil a greenish or bluish hue.
The deposits range from volcanic ashfalls to mud and siltstone, sandstone and limestone. This same lack of oxygen allowed massive logs swept into the area by an ancient flood to fossilize with silica eventually replacing the cellular structure of the wood, and trace minerals giving the resulting quartz its rainbow of colors.
This scene can be found on Highway 89 as it traverses the Colorado Plateau between the villages of Cameron and Bitter Springs prior to dipping down into the Colorado River area. "Chinle Formation, Painted Desert Vista" is formatted in the 1:2 ratio vista size for where strikingly beautiful, bold and colorful landscape art is desired to satisfy a demanding interior design requirement. It can be obtained in lengths up to 8 feet wide with remarkable clarity for presentation on large walls, corridors, meeting rooms and open interior spaces. This photograph can be found in my American Landscape Vistas collection, along my Art In Geology collection.
