A Eastern Chipmunk sitting on a part of a log, these are small striped squirrels native to North America and Asia. Chipmunks are an important part of forest ecosystems in that they serve as a method of subterranean dispersal of spores of fungi that have symbiotic associations with trees. They are omnivores consuming fruits, nuts, grains, eggs of birds, frogs, insects and fungi, and they will store many food items in their burrows.
