Want the local scuttlebutt? There is a beautiful piece of property just half a mile southwest of downtown Raleigh. It is a grass and tree-covered hill that has been the home of North Carolina's premier Mental Hospital since 1856. Now closed, the property has become the center of a firestorm of political/business/anthropomorphic debate. Sell it? Develop it? Save it as a park? While they are arguing, mild-mannered artists like myself are able to set up our easels and paint away. The views from the hill didn't used to be that great, but a devastating tornado came through in 2011 and cleared out just enough of the enormous trees to provide some glorious views of our fair skyline. The proverbial silver lining, for sure.
