Description
This is the world famous Route 66 landmark called Cadillac Ranch. Billionaire Texan Stanley Marsh wanted to build a piece of public art that, in his words, "Would baffle the people." So he hired a group of art hippies from San Francisco to design and build the attraction. They drove 10 Cadillacs ranging from 1949 to 1963 models into the field just west of Amarillo ( alongside I-40 ), half buried them nose down in a line pointing west. Finished in 1974, the years have led to vandalism of parts and the lure of painting the cars with various colors of spray paint. Highly popular particularly with foreigners, the paint grows thicker and thicker as the would be artists keep coming. Sadly, they opt to leave the empty cans on the ground instead of packing them out.

These cars are so cool, and they change as people continue painting them. Great shot! L
Jim McCain replied:
Yes, the cars change as often as the next wave of people stop and spray.... The paint is unbelievably thick. Thanks for the comments Randi Grace ! I have been out of touch on FAA so yours is the first comment in a while... Starting over... :)
