Description
Pain during angina. Coloured Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans of the brain of a patient during an attack of angina pectoris. The brain is viewed in horizontal section, with the front of the head facing up. Blood flow is colour-coded: white, red to yellow (high); green, blue to black (low). The most active areas of the brain have the highest blood flow, depicting painful sensations. In the bottom row, the thalamus (at brain centre) is active and it channels sensory information into the brain. In the top row the frontal cortex is active and conscious pain is being experienced. Angina is heart pain due to lack of oxygen to the heart muscle, caused by obstructed arteries.
