Description
Close up of a Baunscheidt's Lebenswecker, counter irritation device, dating from around 1880, Germany. Baunscheidtism, which takes its name from its inventor Carl Baunscheidt, is a historical form of homoeopathy. The Lebenswecker (meaning 'life awakener'), was designed to create skin inflammation in order to draw the patient's attention away from a primary injury or ailment, elsewhere in the body. An area of skin would be primed with irritants such as toxic oil, and then punctured with the array of sharp needles via a spring loaded mechanism.
