"Cows at the Barn"
by Debra and Dave Vanderlaan
... Sunset colors add a glow
to the western sky just before dusk.
The cows are ready to eat
and mingling in the pasture
in front of the barn.
This is one of the vintage old barns
in North Carolina, surrounded
by the Smoky Mountains,
near the borders of Georgia
and Tennessee.
The hillsides are dotted
with small family farms
in this poorer area
of the Appalachian Mountains.
Captured in the Spring
on a rainy day,
the grass is wet
and the aged wood of the barn
is darkened from the recent shower.
The clouds in the sky
are a pretty peach and gold
and there is a light mist
over the forest on the edge
of the meadow.
A creek runs along the bottom border
of the field,
full of fresh mountain water
to sustain the family and the cows...
"After 30 years in the floral and plant nursery business, Debra and Dave Vanderlaan sold both businesses and turned their life-long photography hobby into full-time obsession.
