Looking like the earth split open, the 600-foot-deep Rio Grande Gorge cuts through the northern New Mexico landscape. At the upper right, snow-capped Wheeler Peak rises more than 13,000 feet high. The Rio Pueblo de Taos flows along its own narrow canyon across the width of the scene to its confluence with the "Great River" at the lower left.
