Inspired by a deep interest in consciousness, I began to use meditation as a means of clearing my mind before beginning a piece. I believe that doing this is helpful in the creative process because it dismisses society’s preconceived notions about what constitutes “good art”. I believe that in order for one to truly learn about the self through art there should be no standards dictating the flow of ideas. In Buddhist philosophy, enlightenment is reached through transcending the ego; by forgetting all expectations for the work and fears of criticism, the practice of making art becomes a natural translation of the mind into a physical form.
