Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section of the common or black alder (Alnus glutinosa). This is a European deciduous tree (family Betulaceae) growing to a height of 25m. The larger cells to the top of the image represent springwood (earlywood) while the more densely packed cells to the bottom of the image result from autumn (latewood) growth. Magnification: x18 at 10cm wide.
