Dwarf-cypress trees are actually bald-cypress (Taxodium distichum) trees of slow growth. The southern-most point for these water-loving cypress trees is in the Everglades. These southern-most cypress trees do not grow like they do further north in Big Cypress Swamp. They grow much slower so they do not reach the height or size that bald-cypress normally does. Their size is deceiving. These dwarf-cypress can be one hundred years old or more. Dwarf-cypress grow scattered, while the larger bald-cypress grow in large stands. Because of intense logging years ago and habitat destruction, it is rare to find the large healthy stands that once dotted the Everglades. On this particular day in Everglades National Park, as the sun set in the west, a storm was approaching from the north. A beautiful view from the Pa-hay-okee Overlook.
