Description
Rows of sturdy wood and cast iron desks fill this one room school. You can just imagine them filled with little children in overalls and full skirts. My father went through 8th grade in a similar setting, with the older children helping the younger ones. And the younger ones learning from just hearing the older one's lessons being taught nearby. The hole in the upper right hand corner of the desk was for your inkwell. And many an unsuspecting girl got her braids dipped in that inkwell by a mischievous boy sitting behind her.

The desks look almost identical to ones in the three one-room schools I attended in a small town in the 60s. There were two grades in each schoolhouse. In your design details you wrote, "The hole in the upper right hand corner of the desk was for your inkwell. And many a unsuspecting girl got her braids dipped in that inkwell by a mischievous boy sitting behind her." That must be what started the new trend when girls began pinning their braids on top of their head.
