This work was selected to represent the t-shirts of the 2015 Rockport-Fulton Hummer Bird Festival. It was printed on light yellow t shirts and signed several shirts last year and this year. I would also like to let everyone know that Peggy at "Texas By Design" in Rockport, Texas, has selected this work to be represented in embroidery on shirts featured in her shop in Rockport and at the festivals that she often frequents. Please check out her website as she features only local Rockport artists on her shirts. Thank you Peggy!
The Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) is a small blooming tree or large shrub native to Texas, the Desert Southwest and Mexico. I decided to choose this hardy little tree with gorgeous flowers to be the "Dinner at the Oasis" for the immature male Rufous Hummingbird (left) and the mature male Black Chinned Hummingbird (right) who stopped for some nectar from it's showy and orchid like purple and white flowers.
These trees are popular here in Texas for landscaping, but can be found growing wild in washes and areas where there is water in the deserts from Southern California and Baja California, Mexico, to Texas and throughout Mexico.
These trees really put on a show when they bloom and are easy keepers in hot and dry areas - one of my favorite trees. The hummer birds in our area also agree and are often found stopping to feed or take a look at their lovely flowers.
