Artist's Description
Located in the Allegheny Mountains, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park marks the the last major American Civil War battle in West Virginia. One of 600 historical sites on the Civil War Discovery Trail, the Droop Mountain Park was the site where the state's destiny was decided. When Union forces under General William W. Averell defeated the Confederate army lead by General John Echols in November, 1863, the Confederacy lost its control of West Virginia. The following spring, the new state of West Virginia fell under the control of the federal government.
