Description

This mosaic of Christ Enthroned with Mary and John the Baptist can be found above the main gate of Il Duomo Cathedral in Florence, Italy, otherwise known as Santa Maria del Fiore. This mosaic was created in Venice in the 19th century based on drawings by Niccolò Barabino. It is one example of the many masterpieces of art that decorate both the exterior and interior of this famous Italian cathedral built in the 14th century. John the Baptist holds a banner describing Jesus as the Lamb of God, reminiscent of John 1:29 where he declared "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world". This mosaic also pictures the Lord Jesus Christ enthroned as King. As the Bible says in Revelation 7:17, "For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
