Description
East and West Indies. 18th-century Spanish map showing the Western Hemisphere and the relative position of the East Indies (left) and the West Indies (right). The map shows the Americas, which were still being explored by Europeans, and some of the islands of South-East Asia. Australia and Antarctica had not been discovered yet. Other features of this map include the equator, and two meridians marking east and west (far left and centre right). At lower left is an inset showing the world's climate zones (polar, temperate and tropical), with the path of the Sun in the sky marked with signs of the zodiac. This map is based on the work of Fray Juan de Torquemada (c.1562-1624). This edition was published in 1723, the year Torquemada's work of 1615 ('Monarquia indiana') was republished in a second edition.
