Description
Elisee Reclus (1830-1905), French geographer and writer. Reclus studied geography under Carl Ritter at the University of Berlin, and then spent many years travelling. He was arrested following the Paris Commune of 1871, and sentenced to perpetual banishment from France. He settled in Switzerland, where over nearly 20 years from 1875 to 1894 he wrote his 19-volume masterwork 'The Universal Geography, the Earth and its inhabitants'. This work won him the Gold Medal of the Paris Geographical Society. This artwork, by Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906), dates from 1900.
